I just returned from the Corvallis Fall Festival in Oregon. It was a great show for me to get to know my newly adopted city! We're planning to move to Corvallis next summer, and I wanted to do the show to get a feel for the community. I couldn't be more impressed. The people came out in droves to support their community event, and they all had great things to say about their community... "it's such a family oriented community"... "we wait for this show every year"... "the schools are great"... "we are a green community"... "Go Beavers!". Needless to say, I'm even more excited than ever to move and am looking forward to adopting this new city and making a home for my family there. And for the rest of you?.. Visit Corvallis! It's a great place full of nice people.

In college it was all Oils. Acrylics were scoffed. Watercolors... nobody touched them. After college was another story. With no studio to call my own and painting out of my home, I quickly changed my attitude and moved to Acrylics. It wasn't long before I fell in love with them. However, I still missed the oils at times, and finally made a little concession - Oil Sticks! I had forgotten about those post college days, and just recently rekindled the fun of using the oil stick over an acrylic painting base. It was fun, but felt so foreign. It was like relearning to paint all over again. On the canvas I couldn't get the lines of the oil stick smooth enough. On the paper, it just mooshed everywhere. The good news - it will get better. The even better news - this is where true art can be found, in those little moments when you have to battle the medium and work hard to get the image you want, never sure if you truly can get it. Doing what you do well over and over and over again. It no longer becomes art. Finding new paths and reinventing your work... that is where you will find art.

I love Oregon! I spent most of my childhood vacationing on the coast of Oregon in the summer, and loved every minute of it. I just returned from spending 10 days there with my family. During our trip I (with my husband driving) created several little drawings as I watched the hills, valleys, orchards, and vineyards of Western Oregon go by. It was great fun, and I'm looking forward to going back in the next few weeks for the Corvallis Oregon show and the Lincoln city shows I'll be attending. Look for me there if you're in the area!
